The motorized lawn mower is a 20th century marvel that has spawned an industry based on the quest for the perfect lawn. The riding mower, the brainchild of engineers experienced in agricultural equipment, answered the need for a faster cut during suburbia's expansion in the 1950s. The John Deere LX255 lawn tractor was produced with a modest but reliable Kohler 15-horsepower motor with electronic ignition.
Parts and the Whole
The LX255, produced between 1999 and 2001, had a wide cutting deck and gasoline-powered engine. Like other manufacturers, John Deere uses a variety of components produced by other manufacturers in its mowers and this model housed a 15 horsepower Kohler 426cc 1-cylinder, 4-cycle engine. The electronic ignition, which had been common for 10 years or more when this model was built, marked an improvement over the older mechanical ignitions that contained distributors.
Ignition Facts
Modern electronic ignitions replace the distributor, which relies on the physical movement of a flywheel to generate electrical pulses to the spark plug, with a magneto -- a magnetic coil that transfer pulses generated by a solid-state switch. Electronic ignition systems generate stronger pulses more efficiently -- an important consideration in a 1-cylinder engine -- and use less fuel than older ignition systems. The LX255 series used an electronic ignition module with a flywheel and 15-amp “stator,” which contained magnetic coils. Parts are available for this ignition system from John Deere and from independent parts suppliers.

The seat safety switch on a riding lawn mower also is called an interlock switch, or commonly, a kill switch. This switch is an integral part of the safety features that all must be in place for a John Deere LX255 to start and operate. John Deere recommends that operator's test the seat switch before each use.
1
Sit in the operator's seat of the lawn mower. Push the parking brake under the steering wheel on the right in to lock it.
2
Push down the PTO switch on the right side of the dash to disable the blades.
3
Move the throttle lever upward to about half throttle for a cold start. If the mower was in use recently and warm, move the throttle lever to the slow position.
4
Push up the choke lever on the left of the dash to engage the choke. Turn the ignition key to start the engine. Release the key immediately when the engine starts and push the choke lever down to turn it off.
5
Push the throttle lever on the left side of the dash upward to allow maximum engine speed. Pull out the park brake lock on the right to release it. Press the brake release lever on the right of the engine with your right foot and release it. This disengages the brake.
6
Push up the PTO switch on the right side of the dash to start blade rotation. Stand up and rise from the seat. The engine and blade rotation should stop if the seat safety switch is operating correctly. If these two items do not stop, the safety interlock switch under the seat is faulty and needs replacing.
